The Waites Island project highlights how collective generosity can transform a cherished coastal gem into a community asset. The project brings together OSI, the SC Office of Resilience (SCOR), the SC Conservation Bank, Coastal Carolina University, DNR, SCPRT and others in a single effort.
Generosity by the Boyce Family whom sold their 500‑acres of Waties Island to OSI at a significant discount—made the conservation of this area possible. In addition, Sustain SC’s new Land & Water Action Fund kicked off with a $500 K grant from Google, immediately matched by the Waccamaw Community Foundation is proof that local donors and businesses can unite to safeguard a shared natural treasure.
Once formally designated a state park and Heritage Trust Preserve, Waties Island will offer public access, kayak and horseback tours, turning this wild barrier island into a lasting community asset for recreation, education, and research.
